Community radios are emerging as powerful tools in the fight against tuberculosis (TB) in Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest reported TB cases in India. In a collaborative effort, SMART NGO and C-FAR organized the online training and orientation session that convened 33 community radio stations from 23 districts, focusing on high-burden TB areas. This initiative aligns with the Uttar Pradesh government’s 100-Day TB Campaign, which is a critical step toward India’s goal of eliminating TB by 2025.

The session featured Dr. Shailendra Bhatnagar, State TB Officer, who highlighted the transformative role of community radios in reaching remote and marginalized communities. Dr. Bhatnagar stated, “The last-mile connectivity is ensured by community radios, making them indispensable in delivering accurate health information.” He also provided a comprehensive overview of the campaign’s core strategies, which include early detection through testing, addressing the challenges of multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), and ensuring nutritional support for TB patients.
A significant focus of the campaign is on vulnerable groups, including children, women, and malnourished individuals. The Nikshay Poshan Yojana, a key government initiative, provides ₹500 per month (₹1500 every three months) as nutritional support to TB patients, along with a one-time payment of ₹3,000 upon diagnosis. Such measures are designed to improve patient outcomes and foster greater community participation in TB elimination efforts.
Earlier patients used to get DBT
* Rs. 1500 + 1500 (@Rs. 500 per month)
* From 1 Nov 2024, it is escalated to Rs. 3000 + 3000 (@Rs. 1000 per month)
Dr. Bhatnagar patiently responded to all queries collected from the field by community radio stations, ensuring that concerns from the grassroots level were addressed. His engagement further strengthened the connection between the campaign and the communities that are most affected by TB.

Community radios have been instrumental in dispelling myths and misconceptions about TB while reducing stigma and encouraging health-seeking behavior. By leveraging local languages and culturally resonant narratives, they foster trust and engagement among listeners. The event also highlighted the critical role of TB Champions and Nikshay Mitras, who have been actively involved in raising awareness, providing care, and inspiring communities through their lived experiences.
The campaign has gained momentum across all 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh, with community radios serving as change-makers by amplifying health messages and encouraging collective action.
