Ramazan 2024: How to fast safely with diabetes

Fasting during Ramazan with diabetes can be safe with proper precautions. When done correctly, it may even offer some benefits.

India has over 101 million people living with diabetes, with an additional 136 million at risk of developing the condition. Many of them will observe the fasting month of Ramazan, which can present challenges for managing diabetes.

During Ramazan, changes in eating and sleeping patterns can affect blood sugar levels, leading to complications like low or high blood sugar, dehydration, and altered insulin activity. People with diabetes need to be especially cautious during this time.

Individuals with type 1 diabetes may experience hypoglycemia during fasting hours and hyperglycemia after breaking the fast. Those with type 2 diabetes face similar challenges, while those with type 3 diabetes (related to Alzheimer’s disease) need to maintain overall health.

Dr. Kulsum Ahmed, a community medicine resident, stresses the importance of consulting healthcare providers before fasting. “Not everyone with a chronic condition can fast safely,” she states. “It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to evaluate your specific situation.”

“Binge eating before fasting can disrupt metabolic processes and lead to blood sugar spikes and drops, making fasting more difficult,” says Nabeela Khan, a type 1 diabetic. “Sometimes it leads to a rapid spike in my blood sugar level.”

Pre-Ramazan preparations are essential for diabetic patients. Comprehensive health screenings, medication adjustments, and dietary modifications can help ensure a safe fasting experience. Low-glycemic-index foods are recommended for stable blood sugar levels.

During Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (meal breaking the fast), diabetic patients should focus on balanced, low-carb meals. Staying hydrated with water-rich fruits and avoiding alcohol and excessive caffeine intake are also important.

“Insulin-dependent diabetics should carefully manage their insulin dosages and correct blood sugar levels as needed,” advises Dr. Ahmed.

By following these guidelines and working closely with healthcare providers, individuals with diabetes can safely observe Ramazan while managing their condition effectively.

Benefits of fasting during Ramazan

Fasting during Ramazan can have positive effects on diabetic patients. Studies show it can lower blood lipids, blood pressure, glucose, and HbA1C levels.

With approval from their doctor, Muslim diabetic patients can safely fast during Ramazan and improve their health. HbA1C measures average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months, indicating how well diabetes is controlled.

Blood lipids are fats and cholesterol in the blood, including LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, and triglycerides. High levels can increase the risk of heart disease and other health issues. A lower blood lipid count is generally considered good for health. High levels of certain blood lipids, such as LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular problems. Lowering these lipid levels can help reduce this risk and improve overall health.
