Killer Heatwave: Struggles of Outstation Patients in Delhi

Poor patients travelling to Delhi for healthcare face immense hardship, living in places like subways and footpaths with inadequate facilities. During the deadly heatwave, their challenges double.

Delhi, India’s capital and a renowned medical hub, witnessed a brutal heatwave. Delhi recorded over 275 death tolls as reported by Times of India on June 24. Many underprivileged patients travel for 2-3 days to reach Delhi in the hope to receive affordable and quality healthcare.

These outstation patients are poor and they survive on footpaths, subways and roads in this scorching heat, having lack of proper stay. In winters there are shelters for patients outside AIIMS but in extreme heat there is no such shelter facility. Not only shelters but a lack of basic facility like sanitation and drinking water taps. This raises concerns about how the city protects its most vulnerable residents during extreme weather events. We stepped out to document how they survive during this intense heatwave.
