First organ transplant in a District hospital!

How a District hospital in Kerala’s Ernakulam made history by conducting the first district-level organ renal transplant in India.

Kochi: As India tries to streamline its public health system, a district hospital in Kerala stands out, accomplishing a remarkable feat. This success not only marks a significant triumph for the state’s health infrastructure—which is often celebrated for what is popularly known as “the Kerala model”—but also fosters confidence in the overall public health system.

A district-level government hospital in Kerala successfully performed its first kidney transplant surgery, marking it as the first of its kind in India, according to the state government.

The operation took place at General Hospital, Ernakulam, on Sunday, where a 50-year-old mother donated one kidney to her 28-year-old son, reportedly. Both the mother and son are safe and recovering well since the operation.

In a conversation with Health On Air, Soumya Sathyan, staff nurse and coordinator of organ transplant at the hospital, highlighted the meticulous process involved in the transplant procedure. “We ensure that the donor and recipient are a proper match. While a parent-child pair works well, a husband-wife pair isn’t the best suited due to their lack of blood relation. Additionally, we need to obtain legal clearance by thoroughly examining the history of their relationship and ensuring mutual agreement for organ transplant. Subsequently, a committee comprising 3-4 senior doctors scrutinises all aspects for final approval and schedules the procedure date. Moreover, a repeat cross-matching is conducted 4-5 days before the operation to confirm the accuracy of the match.”

Super-specialty block where the operation took place

In September, the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) granted registration and certification to Ernakulam General Hospital. This marked the first instance of a district-level government hospital receiving approval for organ transplant.

Soumya said that following the nod by the health department, there were a number of requests for transplant procedures. “We’ve received nearly 40 queries for organ transplant, with a majority coming from husband-wife pairs, which is not clinically ideal. The cases that underwent cross-matching for donor and recipient compatibility are approximately 10, and the recently performed operation was the first one to proceed after obtaining approval.”

The surgery took place in the super-specialty block, where modern facilities worth over Rs 50 lakh were arranged.

The state government announced that a district-level government hospital in India had successfully conducted its first organ transplant surgery, marking a significant achievement in public health infrastructure.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan congratulated the doctors and staff, saying that this achievement will serve as an inspiration to further modernise the state’s public health institutions. “Kerala’s public health sector has achieved another milestone with a kidney transplant at Ernakulam General Hospital. This is the first time that an organ transplant surgery has been performed at a district-level government hospital in India. Congratulations to the team behind this remarkable feat,” Vijayan posted on social media platform ‘X’.
